James’ Giant Insects

In this fun science and craft workshop, aimed at Key Stages 1 and 2, your pupils will discover the amazing world of insects met in James and the Giant Peach through the exploration of the Museum’s invertebrate collections.

 

Curriculum Links (science):

Working scientifically:

-Observe closely, using simple equipment

-Perform simple tests

-Identify and classify

 

Living things and their habitat:

-Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other

-Identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats

-Describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food

 

In this workshop, pupils will:

-Discuss the characteristics of insects.

-Go on a bug hunt in the Museum garden (weather dependent).

-Take a close-up look at our museum invertebrate collections.

-Invent a brand new bug species

-Create a collage of your new bug, and have fun coming up with a scientific name
