This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Museum Director or Senior Curator to assume the leadership role of the Bucks County Museum at an exciting time in its evolution.

Replacing the outgoing Director who will be retiring in June this year the successful candidate will join at a time when the Museum is undertaking a significant development project. The Trust has recently submitted a major Lottery bid and an application for National Portfolio Organisation status and plans complete redisplay and enhancement of core facilities.

Management of the Bucks County Museum was transferred from Bucks County Council to a Private Trust in 2014 and a highly committed and experienced Board of Trustees has worked closely with the current Director to develop a strategy for growth and achieve significant improvements. These include agreements with major textile and art collectors, such as the Embroiderers’ Guild, whose collection is housed at the Museum, and partnership in the Paralympic Heritage Trust project to recognise the heritage of the Paralympic movement. The Trust also currently looks after the collections of Milton Keynes Council.

Managerial responsibility will be for a staff of 25 people and overall financial management of the Museum currently with a turnover of £800,000 a year. There is a strong and active Patrons and Friends organisation and a highly motivated group of Volunteers supporting the Museum’s programme. In addition to the very attractive period building in Aylesbury Old Town there is a facility at Halton, near Wendover, which houses the Reserve Collections and where the curatorial staff are based.

Considerable emphasis will be placed on the leadership, commercial development, financial management and communications skills of potential candidates as well as their track record in operational management, fund raising, understanding of good governance and successful collaboration with a Board of Trustees or similar. Due to the ambitious plans already in hand for the Museum’s development this is both a demanding and at the same time very attractive opportunity.
